ElevenLabs: the AI voice that makes a phone agent sound human

What ElevenLabs is, why its AI voice sounds so natural (Spanish included), and how we use it for our agents' phone calls in Blind Agents, trade-offs and all.

When an AI agent answers the phone, the first thing the caller judges isn't what it says — it's how it sounds. A robotic AI voice, or a cadence that lands in the wrong places, breaks trust within the first two seconds. That's why the text-to-speech engine matters so much, and why ElevenLabs has become a reference point: it's one of the few that make a synthetic voice sound genuinely human, with pauses, emphasis and natural delivery — in Spanish, too.

What is ElevenLabs?

ElevenLabs is a speech synthesis (text-to-speech) platform: it turns written text into spoken audio using AI models. Where older synthetic voices were flat, monotone and instantly recognizable as machines, ElevenLabs leans into expressiveness. The voice breathes, pauses, shifts tone and carries intent — which is exactly what separates an agent people trust from one they hang up on.

What ElevenLabs does well

  • Natural, expressive delivery: intonation and rhythm land close to a real person, not a GPS narrator.
  • Multilingual, with strong Spanish: it supports many languages, and its Spanish quality — Latin American accents included — is among the best available.
  • Voice cloning: you can build a custom voice from samples, which helps keep a consistent brand identity across channels.
  • A solid API: it fits into real-time voice pipelines, which is precisely what a live phone agent needs.
  • Proven in production: it isn't just a slick demo; it powers real voice agents talking to people every day.
Text-to-speech turns each agent reply into audio; how natural it feels comes down to how closely it tracks human intonation.

Why naturalness decides the call

In a text chat, a correct answer is enough. On a call, the sound is the entire experience. If the voice sounds metallic or clips sentences in odd spots, the person assumes they're talking to a cheap machine and lets their guard down — or hangs up. Across LATAM and Spain, where a phone conversation is still a channel people trust, that first impression carries real weight. A natural voice won't guarantee you solve the problem, but it buys you the seconds you need to try.

The honest trade-off: cost

None of this is free. ElevenLabs is a premium option, and its pricing is typically usage-based — tied to the audio or characters you generate. At high call volumes, that cost is noticeable next to cheaper or open-source alternatives. The right question isn't 'which is cheapest', it's 'what is it worth for my brand's first phone impression to sound good'. For plenty of businesses running sales or support calls, the answer justifies the price.

Practical rule: on text channels like WhatsApp or email you don't need premium TTS, because there's no audio there. The cost of a very natural voice pays off mainly on the phone channel, where the sound IS the experience.

Why we use it in Blind Agents

In Blind Agents, the voice for our agents' phone calls runs on ElevenLabs. The reason is simple: we tested several options and none sounded as natural in Spanish. Since much of our user base operates across LATAM and Spain, Spanish quality wasn't a cosmetic detail — it was the whole point. We'd rather absorb a higher cost in the voice layer than let an agent's first call sound like a robot.

The voice is one piece, not the whole agent

A beautiful voice is worthless if the agent doesn't understand or resolve anything. ElevenLabs handles how the reply sounds; the rest of the system decides what to say, when to book an appointment, when to look something up in your data, and when to hand the call to a person on your team. The voice is the audio layer of one channel — it doesn't replace the agent's logic or the escalation to a human when it's needed.

The same agent handles WhatsApp, calls and email; the ElevenLabs voice is only the audio layer of the phone channel.

How to get started

  1. Create your agent with no code and describe, in plain language, what it should do.
  2. Connect the phone number and your text channels; the voice is already built in, so you never configure ElevenLabs yourself.
  3. The agent answers calls with a natural voice and hands off to a teammate the moment the conversation calls for it.
