How to Automate Instagram Comments Step by Step

How to automate Instagram comments step by step: when someone comments your keyword, you reply publicly, send a DM, and an AI agent keeps the chat going.

Want a single Instagram comment to turn itself into a direct-message conversation? This guide shows you how to automate Instagram comments step by step with Blind Agents. The idea is simple: when someone comments a keyword on your post or reel, the platform replies publicly to the comment and sends them an automatic DM that opens a conversation. From there, an AI agent keeps it going for you. No code and no external tools required — everything is set up in the Automations section.

Why automate Instagram comments?

Every comment is a spike of interest that cools off fast. Answering by hand doesn't scale: when a reel takes off, it's impossible to reply to hundreds of comments in time, and most of those leads slip away. When you automate Instagram comments step by step, everyone who comments your keyword gets an instant reply, around the clock, and drops straight into a DM conversation where an AI agent handles and qualifies them. You turn your content's reach into real conversations without growing your team.

What exactly does this automation do?

It is the same pattern made popular by tools like ManyChat, but wired straight into your AI agents. When the trigger fires, four things happen in order:

  • It detects the keyword you defined in the comments of a post or reel.
  • It replies publicly to the comment, so the interaction looks natural and invites others to join in.
  • It sends an automatic DM (private reply) with your opening message and opens a conversation.
  • It hands that conversation to an AI agent in the mode you choose: automatic, copilot, or manual.

Instagram only lets you send the DM within a 24-hour window from the comment. Blind Agents respects that window automatically, so you never have to watch the clock.

Before you start

To get it working on the first try, have the following ready:

  • Your Instagram account connected to Blind Agents.
  • An AI agent set up: the one that will handle the conversations that open.
  • The keywords you want to detect (for example, 'price', 'info', or 'want').
  • Optional: the URLs of the specific posts or reels where you want it to fire.

How to automate Instagram comments step by step

Go to the Automations section and click new. The form is split into three sections — Details, Trigger and message, and Agent and delivery — which you fill in order:

  1. Open Automations and click new to build an automation from scratch.
  2. In Details, give it a name you'll recognize (for example, 'Launch reel') and pick Instagram as the channel.
  3. In Trigger and message, add your keywords as chips: each word or phrase that fires the automation when it shows up in a comment.
  4. Set the scope: apply it to all your posts, or only to specific posts by pasting the URL of each post or reel.
  5. Write the opening message — the first DM the person receives after commenting the keyword.
  6. Write the alternative public reply, in case the person doesn't accept messages from everyone (more on this below).
  7. In Agent and delivery, choose the AI agent that will continue each conversation.
  8. Pick the delivery mode: automatic, copilot, or manual.
  9. Save and turn the automation on. From that moment, every comment with your keyword triggers the public reply and the DM.

The alternative public reply (for people who don't accept DMs from everyone)

Instagram won't always let you send a DM: if someone has restricted messages from accounts they don't follow, the private reply won't reach them. So the comment doesn't go unanswered, Blind Agents instead posts the alternative public reply you defined, inviting the person to message you directly. That way no comment is left hanging, whether or not they accept DMs from everyone.

Choose the agent's mode: automatic, copilot, or manual

The mode decides how much your team steps in once the conversation opens:

  • Automatic: the AI agent answers on its own, start to finish. Ideal for high volume and 24/7 replies.
  • Copilot: the agent drafts the reply and a person reviews it before it goes out. Handy when you want to protect the tone.
  • Manual: the automation opens the conversation and sends the opening message, but your team takes it from there.

Specific posts: paste the URL of the post or reel

If you don't want the automation to fire across your whole profile, set the scope to specific posts and paste the URL of each post or reel. It's perfect for focused campaigns: a launch reel with the word 'want', a product carousel with 'price', or a giveaway with its own word. You can run several automations at once, each with its own keyword, message, and agent.

Measure the results in the Monitor

Every automation reports its metrics in the Monitor, so you know whether your keyword and message are landing:

  • Triggered: how many times a comment fired the automation.
  • Sent: how many DMs went out.
  • Delivered: how many reached the recipient.
  • Read ('Seen'): how many DMs were opened.
  • Reply rate: what percentage of people answered and kept the conversation going.

With these numbers you can iterate fast: test different keywords and opening messages, and keep the ones that open the most conversations. Small tweaks to the keyword or the first DM often move the reply rate a lot.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Watch three things: (1) the 24-hour window — the DM only goes out if the person commented within the last 24 hours; (2) keywords that are too generic, which can fire on comments you didn't mean to catch; and (3) forgetting the alternative public reply, without which you'll lose anyone who doesn't accept DMs from everyone.

And if you want to go further, Blind Agents can also trigger automations from an API event: an external form or CRM sends a contact's details and the platform reaches out instantly by email, WhatsApp, or a call. But that's a guide for another day — for now, you have everything you need to turn comments into conversations.
